Problem & Question		Raccoons are invading our property. What can we do to keep them away?
	Solution	Raccoons While they often live in trees, they also inhabit attics and chimneys. They love to prowl around garbage dumpsters and near bird feeding stations. So put out the "Not Welcome!" sign. Make sure proper screening is installed on all possible entry sites such as foundation vents and chimneys. The dumpster areas really need to be closed off. An open dumpster just says "Eat Now!" to hungry varmints. But the biggest reason raccoons menace apartment complexes is due to the fact that people feed them. Tenants do this either intentionally or by leaving pet food outside. Take away they attractant and they often go away. Raccoons usually give birth to 3-5 young in the spring. Right now pregnant mothers are looking for a secure nesting place to have their young. Under your building may just the place, if they can get in. These babies are very cute, but beware. They can be destructive and a serious health issue. If raccoons are spotted on your property, it is time to send out a notice to the residents. Warn tenants that these are wild animals and can be rabid. Do not leave food outside. They should report sightings to you so you can take preventative measures, before they take over. There are a few deterrent products on the market such as Critter Ridder granules but we have found this only slows them down. Trapping and relocating may be the only solution, if they have already found their way under your building.
